I was the third best, which meant that I ended up playing #1 doubles, where I excelled in mediocrity. After I graduated from high school, I played pretty well in the Annapolis city tournament, and then, just a few weeks later, dislocated my right shoulder and, as I learned several years later, ruptured a vertebrae in my neck in a car accident. My tennis playing days pretty well ended then.

2. The last time I was in San Francisco, I went for a long walk through Golden Gate Park. After I made it past the gauntlet of meth addicts on the Haight-Ashbury end of the park ("No, I really don't want to buy your drugs"), I found my way to the tennis courts, where two high school teams were slugging it out. I sat and watched for over an hour. It might have been my favorite part of that trip.

3. Two nights ago, The University of Tennessee (where I work) lost 4-2 to Southern Cal for the national championship in tennis. I watched most of the match on ESPNU, and it was one of the most intense sporting events I'd seen in a long time. I have a racquet in the garage somewhere. I'm dying to dig it out and see how long my shoulder lasts.Darrenhttp://www.longpauses.comnoreply@blogger.com
